The Making of Moroccan Leather Poufs: A Journey of Tradition and Skill

Moroccan leather poufs are a staple of Moroccan décor and culture. They are versatile and stylish pieces of furniture that can be used for a variety of purposes, including seating, footrests, tables, and even storage.

But how are these Moroccan poufs made?

Here is a step-by-step guide to the making of a Moroccan leather pouf:

  1.  Sourcing the leather: The finest leathers are sourced from Marrakech tanneries, where the same tanning methods have been used for centuries. The leather is washed, tanned, dried, and colored using natural agents and plants.
  2.  Drawing and cutting the leather: The leather is then brought to the cooperative, where another team will draw the patterns on the leather using a pen and then meticulously cut them into geometrical shapes. Each pouf is made out of 36 pieces of leather.
  3.  Sewing and embroidering the leather pouf: The majority of the cutting process is carried out by men, but the fine decorative sewing is done by women. The pieces of leather are hand sewn together using a special type of wool called ‘’Sarma’’ to give the pouf its first shape. The distinctive Moroccan pattern on the upper side of the pouf is also embroidered entirely by hand and takes about an hour to finish.
  4.  Stuffing the pouf: Once the pouf is sewn together, it is stuffed with a mixture of foam and feathers. This gives the pouf its soft and comfortable feel.
  5.  Finishing touches: The final step is to add the finishing touches, such as stitching on the zippers and attaching the legs.

The making of a Moroccan leather pouf is a time-consuming process that requires a great deal of skill and craftsmanship. Each pouf is unique, and the natural color variations, wrinkles, and creases are part of what makes these poufs so special.

Tips for choosing and decorating with Moroccan leather poufs:

  • Choose a pouf that is the right size and shape for your space and needs.
